Suzie’s Journey to a New Home

Sometimes we here at Durham Dogs & Cats Home receive requests for assistance outside of our normal working hours, and we always have a member of our management team on standby to help in emergencies.
Suzie came to Durham Dogs & Cats Home via one of these incidents. At 6 am one morning, paramedics were trying to help a lady who was seriously ill. Unfortunately, her dog didn’t understand the paramedics were there to help and began defending her. This is where we were able to help by safely removing the dog and allowing the lady to be taken to hospital.
But that wasn’t the end of Durham Dogs & Cats Home’s involvement, and this is where we meet Suzie.
When the lady was taken to hospital, she had to leave her other pets (4 cats) behind, with Suzie among them. As we have a small cattery that can only take cats that come straight from homes, we were able to give all of her cats a safe place to stay.
Sadly, the lady passed away and without any family to take on the animals, Durham Dogs & Cats Home was asked to take ownership of them and find them new forever homes.
Suzie had health issues of her own, her eyes were cloudy and treatment was needed. Like many of the animals Durham Dogs & Cats Home deals with we had no veterinary history for Suzie and it took a lot of our veterinary team’s skill (and patience) to get Suzie’s problems under control.
Eventually, in January, a full 6 months after she first came to Durham Dogs & Cats Home, our vet decided that Suzie was finally fit for rehoming.
The nature of her illness means it is impossible to say with any degree of certainty that her problems will not recur, however at the end of January we were able to find a wonderful family who have taken her into their home and offer the love she richly deserves in full knowledge of the issues she has and may yet encounter.
It is only with the generous support of people like Suzie’s new family that we are able to give so many dogs & cats the love and support of a warm home that they all truly deserve.
